Ebenezer has always hated wearing long pants, even when the weather is below zero. It was fine when I homeschooled, but now that he is in school, showing up in shorts is a problem. Not only is it against school policy, since they are supposed to be appropriately dressed for the weather, but let’s be honest, I feel (a little) like a bad mom.
Many kids with Sensory challenges struggle with the way their clothes feel. These kids often can’t bear to wear socks, underwear, clothing with tags, and even shoes.
I mentioned this challenge to Eby’s teacher, so she wouldn’t be surprised when he showed up in shorts on snowy days. She suggested we try compression leggings like basketball players (and other athletes) wear under their shorts.
Brilliant! Why didn’t I think of that (6 or 7 years ag0)? Seriously, this small thing would have made Eby’s life (and mine) easier.
Ebenezer is happy, and for the first time he is warm even on very cold days. To top it all off, he’s even wearing socks this year, which has been a big, smelly challenge.
Maybe you already figured out a solution to the no-long-pants challenge, but if you haven’t, give this a try with your sensory-challenged kids and let me know how it goes.
It’s amazing when a solution is this simple.
